Travel Well With Traveling Vineyard

Published / by StevenLHarris / 1 Comment on Travel Well With Traveling Vineyard

While Napa is famous for its numerous wineries, and many people visit the wine country solely to sample the unique bounty, there are those who never enter a tasting room.

The wine guides of Traveling Vineyards find Napa to be a wonderful, relaxing, informative and adventurous destination without drinking a drop.

If you’re the “hands-on” type vacationer you can get some exercise and take in the beauty of the countryside with a hike up Mt. Saint Helena in Robert Louis Stevenson State Park.

Another option is attending a cooking class at the Silverado Cooking School with Chef Malcolm de Sieyes. At the end of class you can enjoy the meal you prepared yourself.

For art lovers there’s the Napa Art Walk exhibition. In addition to enjoying the art, if a purchase is made, a small amount is directed toward funding future shows.

The Napa Valley Historical Society offers tours and lectures to help you envision what the area was once like. The Society has collected tangible artifacts from long ago for viewing.

Napa Valley also grows great olives. A visit to Round Pond Estate will offer a guided tour of their olive mill showing how the olives become the oils. The estate grows Mediterranean olives with old-world methods, producing craft oils flavored with spices, herbs and flowers, in addition to traditional oils.

If you just want pampering, you can’t go wrong at The Calistoga Ranch, famous for natural hot springs, and Auberge Spa.

There are several benefits to becoming a Wine Guide for Traveling Vineyard. You are your own boss and your schedule is flexible. After set-up and prep, you guide your group through the tasting, using several different wines. Training is provided. For help, or advice, there’s always a support system as near as your phone.

The Breakthrough In Tissue Regeneration Discovered By Dr. Cameron Clokie

Published / by StevenLHarris / 1 Comment on The Breakthrough In Tissue Regeneration Discovered By Dr. Cameron Clokie

Cameron Clokie is directly responsible for Peter Russel having a complete jawbone despite the fact he lost seven centimeters due to a benign tumor. This is possible because of a revolutionary new treatment that has completely changed restorative surgery.

So far eight people in Canada have been helped by this surgery. Adult stem cells can become bone tissue with the use of a specific protein. Cameron Clokie heads the University of Toronto’s oral and maxillofacial surgery and discovered this technique that allows bones to grow just as they do in a baby. Learn more about Cameron Clokie:

The procedure has been performed at Mount Sinai Hospital and Toronto General Hospital and is a gigantic milestone in tissue regeneration. In the past reconstructing a body part was painful and involved taking muscle, fat and bone from other areas of the body.

Another of Dr. Cameron Clokie’s cases involved Ms. McFarlane who also lost part of her jaw due to a benign tumor. Her face became distorted but because her tumor involved a joint she was unable to be considered for the revolutionary surgery. Her jaw tissue was replaced in a standard surgery and she has 12 centimeters of bone removed from her shin.

When Dr. Clokie compared the two cases Ms. McFarlane had an operation lasting 19 hours and was in the hospital for two weeks. She requires a second operation where she will have bone removed from her hip. Mr. Russel’s operation lasted four hours and he was left with a vague scar. He was hospitalized for two nights and was skiing in Colorado two weeks after his surgery.

Dr. Clokie performs the reconstruction with a growth protein modeled into the shape of the jaw section in need of replacement. The procedure is supported with a titanium rod. As the blood vessels begin to grow the gel dissolves and the growth of the jawbone fills in any gap.

Dr. Cameron Clokie views the procedure as an excellent example of the capabilities of regenerative medicine.

The biggest problem with the procedure is the expense. The required protein comes at a cost of over $6,000 and Medicare will not cover this cost. The protein is called bone morphogenetic protein and will be vital for more breakthroughs in this field.
